Neil Sedaka put it to music. Breakin’ up is hard to do. For me, it’s been extremely difficult to break up with an actual capital G, Genius.
First break up, summer of 2006. Reunited, summer of 2006.
Second break up…summer of 2009.
Reunited in Nashville in fall of 2009 to start producing bands in the basement of a house off Dickerson Pike.
Third break up - summer of 2010. I broke my femur, we went to San Francisco to produce a band and I ended up joining the band to play drums because we fired their drummer in the middle of pre production.
Reunited early 2011 to go on tour with Emery (our enablers in the worst and best ways possible if we are being honest) as Hawkboy. Put out 2 EP’s.
Then came the fourth break up in fall of 2011. Hawkboy was dead.
December 2011 - reunited for As Cities Burn SILYAYD album play at Unsilent Night Festival in Dallas. This set up one of our longest stints as a band! We played some headliners, sold out Exit-In in Nashville faster than any band in history (21 minutes, the venue owner texted our promoter Mark Moseley “who the fuck are these guys?”) and then helped some promoter in Raleigh, NC lose an insane amount of money on an ill advised festival just before we went to the UK while my wife was six months prego driving a Ford Taurus with no AC during the middle of summer and lost an insane amount of money trying to sell t shirts that had the English national futbol team logo on the front.
Not broken up again yet - went out on Underoath’s farewell tour so technically we were PART of a breakup but just not ours in early 2013.
Lingered for a couple years until I saw our former booking agent, Dave Shapiro, at an August Burns Red show in San Diego. Standing side stage he said - “You guys doing a 10 year tour for SILYAYD? I could probably get you really good money for that.” 6 months later we were back.
Vowed to never play again at the end of that tour.
2016 - booked some shows with Acceptance, broke up after they were announced.
2018 - decided to make a new record with TJ. Headlined in the summer, got in a fight with our tour manager on stage. Cody had my back, it was cool. Went on tour with Silverstein and Hawthorne Heights in November - January. Tried to break up during that tour but it didn’t work. Booked a headliner around the release of ‘Scream Through The Walls’ - it went horribly. Like truly horrible. Broke up at the end of it summer, 2019.
Fall 2021 - reunited to play SILYAYD one last time at Furnace Fest. Broke up after.
2023 - As Cities Burn performed their “final live” show according to AI overview on google at Furnace Fest ‘23. Cody was the only one from the band to play, I found out on social media that the show was happening. Long story. Broke up, without me this time.
2025 - Emery asks us to go on tour, for some reason it sounds fun and I tell Cody don’t worry about the last break up, nobody cares at this point. Play Furnace Fest again. Plan another tour with Emery for 2026.
2026 - Write a record, demo a record, go on tour with Emery, record a record, get an offer for Underoath tour. The most back possible.
As Cities Burn is a toxic, unhealthy, insane, doomed, idiotic, can’t get our shit together, 17 breakups, horrible relationship with our fans, absolutely clueless about what to do in the music business, can’t get a booking agent, can only get our friend Matt Carter to help us with anything because he is also incredibly stupid (proof in how often he allows himself to get sucked into our orbit) did I mention shit show - no I didn’t - shit show of a post hardcore, indie rock, emo, screamo, 90’s alt rock can’t figure out what the fuck genre we are band.
So. Based on all of that…
You gotta know this record must be really fucking good to be seeing us back out here. I’m a bit terrified of what I might get myself sucked back into. I have a good job and a bunch of kids playing little league that I don’t want to miss.
Unfortunately, I moved to Louisiana in 2003 to play drums for a damn Genius. And I can’t all the way quit.
